A leading union has attacked plans to deploy the Army and the police to cover for striking health workers as outrageous .

Midwives, nurses, ambulance drivers and other NHS staff in England will walk out for four hours on Monday in a row over pay.

Some health workers in Northern Ireland will also take action.

Unison said the Army and police will cover for striking staff in London.

Christina McAnea, Unison s head of health, said: The fact the Government did not even try to talk to trade unions to arrange emergency cover in the capital is outrageous. Instead they ve decided to deploy military troops as a quick fix.

We have agreed emergency plans with all the other ambulance trusts in England. So it is alarming that the capital s emergency service cannot cope with a four-hour stoppage when they have been given plenty of notice.

The move shows there are serious underlying staffing issues and underfunding within the London Ambulance service. It also raises questions about the service s capacity to deal with a real emergency.
